Patient guide
Preparing for your hip or knee replacement
A few simple steps in the weeks before surgery can make your operation safer and your recovery faster.
Get as fit as you can
The stronger you go into surgery, the better you come out of it.
- Keep moving. Gentle daily activity keeps your muscles strong even when the joint is sore.
- If you smoke, stopping before surgery lowers your risk of wound problems and infection.
- A healthy weight reduces the load on your new joint and the risks of surgery.
- Keep other conditions, such as diabetes or blood pressure, well controlled.
Get your home ready
- Clear walkways and remove loose rugs and cables you might trip on.
- Put everyday items within easy reach.
- Arrange for someone to help at home for the first days.
Practical things to plan
- Ask which of your regular medicines to continue or pause before surgery.
- Plan your transport home and your first follow-up.
- Bring comfortable, loose clothing and flat, secure shoes.
Good questions to ask at your appointment: How long will I stay? When can I walk, drive and return to work? What should my recovery look like week by week?
