Patient guide
Is joint replacement right for you?
Joint replacement is one of the most reliable operations in medicine — but it is not the first step, and not right for everyone.
Non-surgical care comes first
For osteoarthritis, the first-line treatment is not surgery. Many people get real relief from:
- Exercise and physiotherapy to strengthen the muscles around the joint
- Reaching and keeping a healthy weight
- Pain relief and activity changes to stay active with less discomfort
When surgery is worth considering
Replacement is usually considered when joint pain clearly limits your daily life — despite giving non-surgical care a fair try.
What surgery can and can't do
A good result usually means much less pain and much better movement. But it is a real operation with a recovery period, and clear, realistic expectations are part of a good outcome.
We decide together. At your appointment we look at your symptoms, imaging, general health and goals — and choose the path that fits your life, whether that is surgery or not.
This guide is general information, not personal medical advice. The right decision depends on your individual situation — discuss it with your treating clinician.
